Welcome to "Portraits by Porter". I enjoy doing cartoons and caricatures, especially 'Furries' (anthropomorphic animal characters). This gallery features much of my older work, as well as a selection of guest art done by my friends.

About the Artist :

Unless otherwise noted, the artwork in this gallery is by Jay Brandt, in Austin, Texas, USA, and is copyrighted to me. Art featuring MZDM Avatars or Freefall cartoon characters is copyrighted to the creators of those characters.

I frequently participate in several on-line forums as 'Porter', and I use that name as my signature for my artwork. I do a variety of art forms, including mechanical drafting, photography, and calligraphy and illumination. In late March of 2002, I decided to try my hand at cartooning and caricature, with a focus on 'Furry' subjects - anthropomorphic animals. Most of what you will see in this gallery is work that I have done in this style, drawing and inking the pictures by hand, and then scanning them and coloring them on my computer.

About MZDM :

One of the on-line forums that I spend a fair amount of time in is called "Master Zen Dao Meow", or MZDM. This forum is home to an on-line comic featuring 'furry' characters as the main residents, and also is a place for on-line role playing and sharing of artwork related to the MZDM 'universe'. No short description can do this place justice. Follow the link in this paragraph and check it out, to learn more. You will find a large group of very creative people there.

About Freefall :

Freefall is another on-line comic, and the one that got me interested in doing my own cartooning. In early 2002 I had been enjoying this comic, which features an anthropomorphic wolf as one of the main characters. The comic had an on-line forum, in which many of the fans had colored in the strips, or had posted their own Freefall-related fan art. It also had a 'color' version of the site, where a few fans had posted colored in versions of the strips. I tried coloring a few strips myself, using Photoshop, and discovered that I really enjoyed doing this type of art. It was also through the Freefall forum that I found out about MZDM, above.
